Welcome to
Florence City Schools’ website.
On
behalf of Board of Education members and school system employees, I
extend an invitation for you to visit our schools and experience,
first hand, the many wonderful opportunities available to students
in our school system.
The Florence City
Schools reflect the commitment and expectations of our city’s
residents, who have made education a high priority for their
children. This strong local base of support has enabled our school
system to offer one of the highest teacher salary schedules in the
state, attracting an excellent teaching and administrative staff.
Our local base of support has also allowed us to provide the most
extensive curriculum of any school system, public or private, in
Northwest Alabama.
Ours was among the
first school systems in the state to earn accreditation from both
the Alabama State Department of Education and the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools. And, since that time, the
school system has continued to meet and exceed accreditation
standards.
Networked classroom-to-classroom with fiber-optic cabling, our
school system successfully incorporates computer technology within
the instructional program - varying from computer-assisted
instruction in the elementary schools to multimedia presentations
and computer-generated design in middle schools to programming and
supercomputing in high schools.
However, computers
have not replaced classroom teachers in our schools. One hundred
percent of our teachers are certified within the area in which they
teach. Our schools rely on classroom teachers more than ever as the
“gatekeepers” of knowledge who help students access and process
information in a world in which information is changing at an
ever-increasing rate. To assist them with this challenge, our
teachers have been provided cutting-edge facilities and materials as
they offer a curriculum which includes the traditional core courses
(reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies) as well
as foreign languages, fine arts, career-technical courses and
Advanced Placement courses (courses offered to enable high school
students to gain college credit while in high school). Our schools
are also staffed, equipped and eager to accommodate disabled
students as well as those with a variety of exceptionalities.
As you may have
gathered, I am extremely proud of our school system - its students,
parents, teachers and administrators - and the curricula and
services it provides. I would appreciate an opportunity to tell you
more about our schools. If you are moving into the Florence area, I
encourage you to call me at (256) 768-3016. I will be happy to meet
with you and arrange for a tour of our schools and community.
Sincerely,
Kendy Behrends
