  4. Each employee, as a condition of employment will:

    • Abide by the terms of the statement; and

    • Notify the Board of any criminal drug statute conviction occurring in the workplace no later than five days after such conviction.

  5. The Board will notify the appropriate federal agency(ies) within ten days after receiving notice from the employee who is so convicted and will:

    • Require such employee to participate satisfactorily in a drug abuse assistance or rehabilitation program approved for such purposes by a Federal, State, or local health, law enforcement, or other appropriate agency.

See GBR-R for a specific procedural and substantive application of this policy.

Policy GBR-R

The Florence City Board of Education recognizes that in order to carry out its mission it must recruit, select and develop well-prepared personnel. Through in-service education, that state of preparedness can be maintained. The Board of Education also realizes that there are societal ills which can impair the best of personnel. The problem of drugs can exact an enormous toll if it is allowed to affect the job performance of the school system's employees.

In view of the above, it shall be the policy of the Florence City Board of Education to provide a drug-free workplace for its employees by taking the appropriate actions as set forth in the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988.

The Superintendent, as the executive officer of the Board of Education, shall certify, on its behalf, the intent of the Board to provide said drug-free workplace, and shall cause all elements of the act to be implemented in a timely manner.

You Can Help To Maintain a Drug-Free Workplace

Maintaining a drug-free workplace begins with the individual. You can help by:

  • Learning the facts about alcohol and drug use and understanding the requirements of the school system's drug-free workplace policy.

  •   Being a good example: don't abuse alcohol and drugs.

  • Helping victims of alcohol and/or drug use. Relatives and friends of those with an alcohol or drug problem need your support.

  • Letting everyone know that you won't allow, ignore or cover up anyone's alcohol or drug use at work.

  • Supporting recovering co-workers who need your understanding and support while recovering from an alcohol or drug problem.

  • Getting help if you have an alcohol or drug problem. It may be impossible to conquer the problem alone.

There are several agencies in the community that can lend capable assistance to those who are faced with an alcohol or drug-related problem. Here are some of them:

  • Adult Children of Alcoholics—766-7118

  • Al-Anon (for families of alcoholics)—766-7118

  • Alateen (for teenagers in alcoholic environments)—766-7118

  • Alcoholics Anonymous (for the alcoholic himself)—767-3969 or 766-7118 (www.alcoholics-anonymous.org)

  • Bradford Health Services - 760-0200 (www.bradfordhealth.com)

  • Narcotics Anonymous (for the drug addict himself)—1-800-239-5509 (www.na.org)

  • Riverbend Center for Mental Health—764-3431
